Mobile First: Your Customers Are Already There

Over 80% of Ghanaians access the internet exclusively through their phones. Is your website ready for them?

Here is a fact that should shape every business decision you make about your digital presence: the vast majority of your customers will never see your website on a desktop computer. They will see it on a phone. A phone with a 6 inch screen, on a 4G connection that might dip to 3G depending on where they are.

This is not speculation. Ghana has one of the highest mobile internet penetration rates in Africa. Over 80% of internet users access the web exclusively through their phones. Not sometimes. Not mostly. Exclusively.

Yet most business websites in Ghana are still designed on a desktop computer, for a desktop computer. The result is a site that looks impressive on the CEO's laptop and completely broken on the customer's phone. Text too small to read. Buttons too close together to tap. Images that take forever to load.

Mobile first design is not about making your desktop site "responsive." It is about starting with the phone and working outward. Designing for thumbs, not mouse cursors. Prioritising what matters, because screen space is precious.

The businesses that get this right see immediate results. Pages load faster. Customers find what they need. Enquiries go up. Google ranks you higher because Google now uses mobile first indexing. That means Google decides where to rank you based on your mobile site, not your desktop site.

A mobile first approach is not a nice to have. It is not a trend. It is the reality of how your customers experience the internet. If your website does not work beautifully on a GH₵500 Android phone on a patchy 4G connection, it does not work.

The good news is that building for mobile is not harder than building for desktop. It just requires intention. Start with the phone. Make every pixel count. Design for speed. Your customers are already there, waiting.
